2014 El Corazon Mourvedre
We visited El Corazon in Walla Walla last August of 2017.Our biggest reason for reaching out to Spencer at El Corazon was for this Mourvedre - and it was not a disappointment. This is actually a blend of 44% Mourvedre 30% Cinsault & 26% Syrah and here is the story ...
In 2006 owner and winemaker Spencer Sievers began his winemaking career by purchasing 1,200 pounds of grapes & fermenting them in his Portland, Oregon apartment. With some experimentation & a passion for making terroir driven, fruit forward, vineyard & varietal specific wines, the El Corazon style was born. The next year, he moved back to Walla Walla.
On The Nose
Smell ripened raspberries, simmering orange peel with hints of allspice, sugared plums, black pepper and a rich cherry reduction.
Mourvedre thrives in warmer climates, with only 126 acres planted in Washington state, the majority of Mourvedre, El Corazon included, comes out of the warm climate on the Wahluke Slope.
On The Lips
Taste black plum and black cherries married together with notes of cooking spices, dark chocolate and hints of black pepper on the finish.
This full bodied wine is a great example of how the Wahluke Slope accentuates its warm climate into the bottle.Note the gravely, rocky soil covered with sand and silt on the Wahluke Slope as well - perfect for creating bold wines with excellent structure.
On The Table
Pair with roasted duck with a blackberry orange sauce, an asian pork and holy basil stir fry, barbecued butterflied lamb leg with a saltbrush rub or red wine braised short ribs.
